ULAANBAATAR – The state visit of the President of the Republic of Korea, Lee Jae Myung and First Lady Kim Hea Kyung to Mongolia has officially concluded. The visit, held at the invitation of Mongolian President Khurelsukh Ukhnaa, was the first by a South Korean President in 15 years.
During the visit, the two heads of state held official negotiations, participated in the Mongolia-Korea Business Forum, and issued a Joint Declaration. Both leaders emphasized that this visit marks the beginning of a “Golden Era” of cooperation based on shared democratic values, serving as a vital step in deepening their established “Strategic Partnership.”
To further expand relations, the two governments signed 21 official documents outlining cooperation across various sectors, including health, education, technology, transportation, and critical minerals. Additionally, President Lee and the First Lady attended the opening ceremony of the National Naadam Festival as guests of honor before being seen off at Chinggis Khaan International Airport by Foreign Affairs Minister B.Battsetseg.
Diplomatic relations between Mongolia and the Republic of Korea were first established on March 26, 1990. Over the past 36 years, bilateral ties have progressed through several key milestones:
2006: Established a “Good-Neighborly, Friendly and Cooperative Partnership”
2011: Upgraded to a “Comprehensive Partnership”
2021: Reached the level of “Strategic Partnership”
The Republic of Korea opened its embassy in Ulaanbaatar in 1990, and Mongolia opened its embassy in Seoul in 1991.
