Stampede at Mansadevi Temple in India’s Haridwar: 6 die, several injured

District and local police officials in Haridwar informed on the condition of anonymity that a rumour as to falling down of an electric wire falling on the temple steps created chaos in the crowd, triggering the stampede.

DEHRADUN – A stampede took place early Sunday at the renowned Mansadevi Temple in Haridwar, which claimed six lives.  Several devotees were injured in the incident, and were rushed to hospitals as rescue operations were taken up by the local police and the Haridwar district disaster management department.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said SDRF, local police, and other rescue teams are engaged in relief and rescue operations.

“There is The extremely distressing news of a stampede on the track of the Mansa Devi Temple in Haridwar. SDRF, local police, and other rescue teams are engaged in relief and rescue operations. I am in continuous contact with the local administration and constantly monitoring the situation. I pray to Mata Rani for the well-being of all the devotees,” he said in his post on X.

Garhwal Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey confirmed that six deaths were reported by the officials engaged in the rescue operation.

However, other officials in Haridwar district claimed that the death figure had gone up to 10 by 10.30 am.

Speaking to mediapersons, the Garhwal Commissioner informed that a stampede at Mansadevi Temple occurred in the morning as the temple steps were heavily crowded by the devotees. Pandey, who was heading to the spot from Dehradun, said that the reason for the stampede could be known only after an inquiry.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) also joined hands in the rescue operation with the local police district administration, as the news was being filed.
