MANILA – A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck waters off the coast of Manay, Davao Oriental, at 9:43 a.m. local time on October 10, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
The tectonic quake had a shallow depth of 10 kilometers and was centered 62 kilometers southeast of Manay, a coastal municipality in Davao Oriental.
Phivolcs initially put the magnitude at 7.6.
Reported intensities were as follows: Intensity V was felt in the City of Davao, and Intensity IV was reported in the City of Bislig, Surigao del Sur.
Instrumental intensities included Intensity V in Hinunangan, Southern Leyte; Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental; Nabunturan, Davao de Oro; Davao City; Santa Maria, Davao Occidental; Kidapawan City, Cotabato; Alabel and Malungon, Sarangani; and Koronadal City and Tupi, South Cotabato.
Intensity IV was instrumentally recorded in Cebu City; Sulat, Eastern Samar; several towns in Leyte and Southern Leyte; parts of Bukidnon; Cagayan de Oro City; areas in Davao del Sur, Cotabato, Sarangani, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Agusan del Norte, Surigao del Norte, and Surigao del Sur.
Phivolcs said damage and aftershocks are expected following the tremor.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
The Philippines lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. /dm
