NAYPYIDAW – A joint operation between Thailand, Myanmar and China has detained 1,178 suspects in a telecommunications fraud case in the Myawaddy region, and a relevant official from China’s Ministry of Public Security said that all efforts will be made to track down the suspects, Xinhua News Agency reported.

In recent days, 1,178 Chinese nationals suspected of committing telecommunications fraud in Myanmar’s Myawaddy region have been repatriated to China by the Chinese Public Security Bureau via Thailand. Since December 1, China’s Ministry of Public Security has dispatched Jiangxi Public Security Police to Mae Sot, Thailand, to conduct a repatriation mission by air. With the cooperation of Thailand, 1,178 Chinese nationals suspected of committing telecommunications fraud who were transferred from Myanmar to China have been repatriated to China in batches.

The Chinese, Myanmar and Thai police have conducted joint operations again, with Myanmar clearing fraud zones in batches and arresting some people involved in telecommunications fraud. The report said that this operation is another important achievement in putting into practice the spirit of the Six-nation Ministerial Meeting on Combating Online Communications Fraud.

Since February 20, China, Myanmar, and Thailand have jointly carried out the repatriation of telecommunications fraud suspects in Myawaddy, Myanmar. More than 6,600 Chinese telecommunications fraud suspects have been repatriated to China, the report continued. This has provided a powerful deterrent to overseas telecommunications fraud gangs.

The relevant official of the Ministry of Public Security of China said that the joint multinational anti-fraud campaign targeting transnational telecommunications fraud is still ongoing, that international law enforcement cooperation will be deepened, that the crime camps will be resolutely cleared, and that the suspects will be pursued with all their might, the report said.

On November 14, China, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam held a ministerial-level meeting to jointly combat online fraud and discuss future actions.
