BANGKOK – Hundreds of tourists braved the early morning chill and flocked to the top of Loei’s Phu Ruea mountain to enjoy the first rays of sunlight.

Netrnapha Ngamnetr, chief of the Phu Ruea National Park, said many tourists were drawn to the park this weekend because the mercury had dropped to 10 degrees Celsius in the mornings.

She said tourists usually drove to the top of Phu Ruea mountain to enjoy the vista of the morning sun. The mountain is about 1,365 metres above sea level.

The park boasts of a range of sandstone and granite mountains, one of which has a protrusion that looks like a large, ancient Chinese sailing boat.

Netrnapha said with temperatures falling, visitors can also enjoy a sea of mist atop the Phu Ruea mountain. They can also make time to pay respects to the large Buddha statue sitting at the peak.

The national park is about 60 kilometres from downtown Muang district. Those flying into Loei can rent a car or chartered bus to the park.
