TOKYO – A participant in a trial project to resume acceptance of foreign tourists to Japan has tested positive for COVID-19, the Japan Tourism Agency announced Monday.

The person entered Japan via a flight from Thailand on Friday as part of a group tour comprising four people. The person tested negative after taking a PCR test at a Japanese airport.

The tourist reportedly has no fever and is currently quarantining at a hotel in Oita Prefecture.

The route of infection is unknown, said the agency, which has cancelled the group tour to which the infected individual belongs.

The infected person complained of a sore throat Monday morning and took an antigen test, which came back positive.

The other three individuals tested negative and are quarantining at a different hotel.
