KUALA LUMPUR – Tunku Mahkota Johor Tunku Ismail Ibni Sultan Ibrahim has been appointed as the Regent of Johor.

Johor Ruler Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar decreed that the appointment would come into effect as of yesterday.

“I have appointed Tunku Mahkota Johor as the Regent of Johor. I would like to take a short break. Thank you,” said Sultan Ibrahim during the opening of the state assembly at Bangunan Sultan Ismail in Kota Iskandar here.

Meanwhile, Johor Royal Court Council president Datuk Abdul Rahim Ramli said the honorary title for Tunku Ismail would be Tunku Mahkota Ismail, Regent of Johor, which must be used in all official government functions, letters, speeches and prayers.

“Sultan Ibrahim also decreed that Tunku Mahkota Ismail, Regent of Johor, continue leading and handling the Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) football club to strengthen the sport both at the national and international levels,” said Abdul Rahim.

On June 9, Tunku Ismail, the owner of JDT, announced that he had decided to step back from managing the football club.

“Due to my other responsibilities and commitments, I have decided to step down and hand over the day-to-day affairs of the JDT football club to the club’s top management,” he said.

Tunku Ismail had been the driver behind the transformation of the team into a regional giant.

JDT has romped to eight consecutive Super League titles, two Malaysia Cups and one FA Cup.

It also made history by winning the AFC Cup in 2015.

Recently, it became the first team from Malaysia to qualify for the knockout stages of the Asian Champions League.
