KUALA LUMPUR – There is enough evidence to expose those taking advantage of the rice shortage in the country, says Dr Akmal Saleh.
“I will release all the evidence gradually to expose these players joining forces to form a rice ‘cartel’ by artificially hiking its price,” he said when contacted on Monday (Oct 2).
Dr Akmal said this “cartel” took advantage of certain loopholes to manipulate subsidised Special Local Rice prices with the current ceiling price fixed at RM2.60 per kg.
“From the preliminary information I obtained, the subsidised rice is sold as broken rice and priced at RM3.40 per kg, and there are more wrongdoings that I will reveal when the time comes.
“There are few of these players involved, and I will reveal all the evidence and the state they are operating to the relevant authorities.
“I can’t unveil these proofs to the media as I want to ensure action is taken against those guilty by profiting from the rice shortage in the country,” he said.
Dr Akmal also shared photos comparing actual broken rice and local rice sold as broken rice at a higher rate.
“I have enough information to nail these dishonest industry players,” he said.
