NEW DELHI – US President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order imposing an additional 25 per cent tariffs on India for its import of Russian oil, the White House said.
“President Donald J. Trump just signed an Executive Order imposing an additional 25% tariff on India in response to its continued purchase of Russian oil,” the Rapid Response account of the Trump 47 White House announced on X.
The executive order Trump signed read, “To deal with the national emergency described in Executive Order 14066, I determine that it is necessary and appropriate to impose an additional ad valorem duty on imports of articles of India, which is directly or indirectly importing Russian Federation oil.”
“In my judgment, imposing tariffs, as described below, in addition to maintaining the other measures taken to address the national emergency described in Executive Order 14066, will more effectively deal with the national emergency described in Executive Order 14066,” the order states.
“I find that the Government of India is currently directly or indirectly importing Russian Federation oil. Accordingly, and as consistent with applicable law, articles of India imported into the customs territory of the United States shall be subject to an additional ad valorem rate of duty of 25 percent,” it added.

This will take the total tariffs on India to 50 per cent. Earlier last month, Trump had imposed 25 per cent tariffs on Indian goods and an additional but unspecified penalty for purchasing Russian oil and military equipment.
The move comes hours after Trump, in an interview with a news channel, said that he would raise tariffs on India in the next 24 hours for purchasing Russian oil.
“They’re fueling the war machine, and if they’re going to do that, then I’m not going to be happy,” Trump told CNBC in an interview on Tuesday.
A day earlier, the US President had said that he would “substantially raise” tariffs on India for purchasing Russian oil and selling it on the open market for big profits.
“They don’t care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine. Because of this, I will be substantially raising the Tariff paid by India to the USA. Thank you for your attention to this matter!!!” the US President said in the post on Truth Social.
In response, India said that the US actions were “unjustified and unreasonable” and that it “will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security.”
The government also highlighted that the US itself imports uranium hexafluoride, palladium fertilizers and chemicals from Russia.
When Trump was asked about the India’s claim about US trade with Russia, he dodged the question, saying he doesn’t know about it.
