DHAKA – At least three people were injured in a scuffle between supporters two candidates contesting for the upcoming national election in Patuakali-3 constituency on Saturday night.
Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur is running here under the banner of BNP-led alliance, while BNP’s expelled central committee member Hasan Mamun is contesting as an independent candidate.
Police and witnesses said supporters of both the candidates brought out processions in favour of their respective candidates at Dakua area under Galachipa upazila.
Both the groups locked in scuffle when they came face to face near Chatra Government Primary School at around 11:00am, said Galachipa Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Md Zillur Rahman.
However, no one filed any police complaint in this connection till the filing of this report at around 8:00pm last night.
Three people, who were injured in the scuffle, have been admitted in Galachipa Upazila Health Complex, said its medical officer Dr Niamul Hossain.
The OC also confirmed that three were injured in the incident.
However, neither Mamun nor Nur could be contacted over phone for their comments.
Locals said tension runs high between the groups as the voting day approaches.
Both the groups have announced electoral programmes at same venue and same time on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, escalating the tension.
The district’s Deputy Commissioner (DC) and Returning Officer (RO) Dr Mohammad Shaheed Hossain Chowdhury on Saturday served notices to both candidates requesting them to refrain from holding programme in same venue and same time.
Talking to journalists on Saturday, Nurul Haq Nur said his programmes were announced earlier and Mamun later announced programme conflicting his schedule.
However, Mamun could not be contacted over phone for comments on this issue.
Galachipa Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Assistant Returning Officer (ARO) Mahmudul Hasan said, “Law enforcers were deployed on the spots. Both candidates have been instructed to seek permission prior to holding programmes there.”
Meanwhile n Noakhali-2 constituency, independent candidate Kazi Mofizur Rahman alleged that one of his electoral offices was attacked and vandalised by supporters of his rival BNP-nominated candidate.
The incident took place Bhorer Bazar area under Sonaimuri upazila at around 12:00pm yesterday.
“At least three of my supporters were injured in the attack,” said Mofizur, while talking to The Daily Star over phone last night.
When the correspondent called BNP-nominated candidate Zainul Abedin Farroque’s phone last night, a person identifying himself Farroque’s assistant received the phone and said, “It was a trivial matter and we have settled the issue.”
Sonaimuri Police Station’s OC Kabir Hossain confirmed the incident and said no one filed any police complaint to this matter.

Neither the OC nor the UNO could say how many people were injured.
In Gazipur-2 constituency, NCP-nominated candidate Ali Naser Khan has alleged that supporter of a BNP’s candidate tried to kill him on Saturday night.
Two people — supporters of BNP candidate M Manjurul Karim Rony — tried to run a private car over him while campaigning at Porabari Bazar area under Gazipur city at around 8:00pm on Saturday, said Naser Khan, while talking to The Daily Star over phone yesterday.
Md Shahrear Nazir, Gazipur’s additional deputy commissioner and chief of the media cell of Gazipur Returning Officer’s office, said Naser Khan has filed a complaint to this matter and legal action will be taken upon investigation.
Manjurul Karim Rony could not be contacted over phone.
But his election steering committee member Sarker Javed Ahmed Suman said the allegation is false.
