YANGON – The World Food Programme (WFP) warned on March 14 that it would suspend food assistance to one million people in Myanmar due to insufficient funding .
WFP said it will suspend life-saving food assistance to more than one million people in Myanmar from April due to the overwhelming need for funding. The suspension comes at a time when food aid needs are increasing due to conflict, displacement, and access restrictions in the country.
“ The current aid suspensions could have a devastating impact on vulnerable communities across the country who rely solely on WFP assistance for their survival ,” said Michael Danforth, WFP ’s Country Representative in Myanmar .
Without new funding, WFP will only be able to support about 35,000 people, including the most vulnerable , including children under five , pregnant and lactating mothers, and people with disabilities, according to a statement from the agency.
This year, the Myanmar people urgently need US $ 60 million to continue providing life-saving food assistance .
“ WFP urges all partners to find additional funding to meet the needs . The international community must provide the necessary funds to save as many lives as possible , without forgetting the people of Myanmar who need it most , ” said Mr. Dunford .
