COX’S BAZAR – A wild male elephant, about 35 years old, was found dead in the remote hills of Ukhiya in Cox’s Bazar yesterday afternoon, with officials suspecting electrocution as the cause.
The carcass was discovered in Rafique’s Ghona area of Dochhari. Locals spotted the elephant and informed the Forest Department, which later recovered it and collected samples for post-mortem examination today.
Kazi Tarikur Rahman, assistant conservator of forest under Cox’s Bazar South Forest Division, said a veterinary surgeon from the livestock office conducted an autopsy at the scene this noon.
“Once the post-mortem report is available, we will know whether the death was natural or accidental,” he said.
“It seems that the cause of death could be electrocution and a case was filed in this regard,” he added.
The elephant was later buried under the supervision of the Forest Department, he said.
