DHAKA – Agriculture Minister Dr Md Abdur Razzaque today said after discussing the food situation in Bangladesh, World Food Programme Country Director Domenico Scalpelli has said that there is no possibility of famine.

The minister said this while exchanging views with journalists after a meeting with a delegation led by Domenico Scalpelli, country director of the UN WFP, at the Secretariat this noon.

However, all countries, including developed countries like the USA, Australia, the UK, will have to give special importance to food next year, he quoted Scalpelli as saying. “All the countries of the world have to strengthen the social security program for the poor people.”

Razzaque, also an Awami League Presidium member, said various institutions, including the UN and the World Bank, are speculating that there is a possibility of a food crisis in the world.

“The government is working with this in mind. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is very far-sighted. She told us to remain aware. The Ministry of Agriculture is also working seriously,” he said.

“Since independence, the WFP has been cooperating for our food security. For the last six years, the food needed for the Rohingyas has also been provided through them,” he added.

He too said that there will be no famine in Bangladesh, adding that there are reports of bumper yields of Aman from all over the country.
