HONG KONG – Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Algernon Yau Ying-wah met on Wednesday with officials of the China National Intellectual Property Administration and the State Post Bureau in Beijing to exchange views and strengthen cooperation.
Accompanied by Director of Intellectual Property David Wong Fuk-loi, Yau met with Commissioner of the CNIPA Shen Changyu on Wednesday morning, according to a Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government statement.
Under the auspices of the National 14th Five-Year Plan supporting Hong Kong’s development into a regional intellectual property trading center, the SAR government has been committed to protecting IP rights and promoting IP trading, in line with the national strategy to develop IP, Yau said

He thanked the CNIPA for its support, noting that the administration and the Commerce and Economic Development Bureau signed in June 2017 the Cooperation Arrangement in the Area of Intellectual Property, which has been extended to June 2027.
The CNIPA has also been providing technical assistance to the Intellectual Property Department in patent examiner training and substantive patent examination, Yau said.
A pilot project was also launched on Jan 1 for prioritizing examination of qualified invention patent applications filed by Hong Kong applicants in the Chinese mainland, he added.
Yau, accompanied by Postmaster General Leonia Tai Shuk-yiu, then met with Director General of the State Post Bureau Zhao Chongjiu to discuss further collaboration.

In order to seize the opportunities brought about by the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) development, Hongkong Post will leverage the advantages of Hong Kong’s logistics network and vigorously promote cross-boundary delivery services, in particular e-commerce products, to strengthen economic development, Yau said.
Hongkong Post is also pressing ahead with the redevelopment of Hong Kong’s Air Mail Centre and will utilize its cold chain logistics facilities to develop cross-boundary premium logistics business in the GBA, he added.
Yau was scheduled to return to Hong Kong on Wednesday evening.
