The verdict came just 19 days after the horrific incident took place in Dhaka’s Pallabi area on May 19 that sparked nationwide outrage and prompted the government to pledge swift justice.

Judge Masrur Salekin of the Children Violence Suppression Tribunal in Dhaka Metropolitan delivered the judgement at a packed courtroom, said bench assistant Pankoj Peter Gomes.

Around 10:45am, Sohel, 31, and Swapna, 26,were taken to the tribunal amid tight security and kept in the lockup of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court in Dhaka. Later, they were produced before the tribunal.

The tribunal wrapped up the trial proceedings in five hearings, according to the prosecution.

When a call was made to Ramisa’s father’s phone, it was answered by his nephew, Ferdous Sultan.

He told The Daily Star that the family was satisfied with the verdict being delivered in such a short time following the assurance from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. They want this verdict to be executed quickly

On June 1, the tribunal framed charges against the accused. The next day, the tribunal completed testimony.

A total of 16 prosecution witnesses, the victim’s parents and elder sister, three neighbours, a doctor, a Dhaka metropolitan magistrate and the investigator, gave their statements before the tribunal.

On May 24, investigator Ohiduzzaman, a sub-inspector of Pallabi Police Station, submitted the charge sheet before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s (CMM) Court in Dhaka, accusing Sohel of rape, murder and destruction of evidence, and Swapna of destruction of evidence, providing false information and assisting her husband to commit the offence.

Several hours later, the CMM Court transferred the case to the Children Violence Suppression Tribunal for trial.

Ramisa, a second-grade student of Popular Model High School, was found beheaded on May 19 in the house of her neighbour, Sohel.

The following day, Ramisa’s father Abdul Hannan Mollah filed the case with Pallabi Police Station, accusing the couple and an unidentified person.

According to the case statement, Sohel lured Ramisa into his room and raped her. Investigators said he later slit her throat and attempted to dismember the body to conceal the crime.
