BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN – One of the interesting showcases at the get-together ceremony with citizens and residents of Temburong District yesterday was the local ethnic exhibition of the Murut group, displaying traditional food, a longhouse, as well as a traditional arch to welcome very important persons.
Lun Bawang Murut Brunei Association President Lieutenant Colonel (Rtd) Tamin bin Tuah in an interview said, “We are honoured to participate in the get-together ceremony and be involved in His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s 79th birthday celebration.”
This year, he said, “We erected an arch made of firewood. This special arch is to welcome the arrival of a very important person during a family celebration, like a wedding. We also have the Ukui traditional dance to celebrate major events.”
He added, “We also showcased traditional Murut items as well as a traditional gulingtangan performance. We also presented a pesambah of Murut traditional items to His Majesty.”
He also acknowledged the worries of losing Murut traditions due to the rapid change of time. He said, “Through events like today’s, we can showcase traditional items used by the Murut people to help spread awareness and knowledge about the Murut to the public, especially the youth.”
Also participating in this year’s exhibition was the Kelab Sukan Sumpit Lun Tau (KSSLT), featuring blowpipes and a demonstration.
KSSLT Chairman Chin Haji highlighted, “We and all club members are truly proud and touched to be given the opportunity once again to participate and be involved in the get-together ceremony in the Temburong District this year.” He also extended birthday wishes to His Majesty. He said the club currently has 39 members and was established on September 13, 2023 to raise awareness and to preserve the tradition of the blowpipe, which is part of the Murut people’s life”.
