HONG KONG – Every year near the early summer, people make splashes with their paddles on dragon boats. As the boats draw closer to a finish line, the cheers, drumbeats and splashes grow louder through the air. Everyone splashes one another with the “dragon boat water” in hopes of bringing both coolness and good luck. That’s Duanwu, also known as Dragon Boat Festival.

The festival, which fell on Thursday this year, is a traditional festival to watch dragon boat parades and eat zongzi — glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves. Various dragon boat races or parades would be organized across Hong Kong for this annual celebration.
