HÀ NỘI — An all-access pass for public transport will be launched in 2024, according to Hà Nội’s Department of Transportation.

This year, the department will start working on policies to implement the all-in-one public transport pass. This pass will allow travel on all bus and metro lines in Hà Nội, as well as standardise the payment method.

Trần Thị Phương Thảo, deputy director of Hà Nội Public Transport Management Centre, said the digital multi-pass is now available for the Cát Linh – Hà Đông urban metro line and on nine electric bus lines. However, the automated fare collection (AFC) varies, due to the different companies operating public transport lines in Hà Nội.

“The data is disjointed and we haven’t found a way to gather all the data and form a pass for all transportation in Hà Nội,” Thảo said.

All-in-one passes are available on many public transportation systems in cities around the world. They not only enhance convenience, but also allow better management over passenger volumes, demand and the effectiveness of the transport system.

Currently, fares on the Cát Linh – Hà Đông urban metro line are calculated based on journey and destination, while most bus lines are still using physical tickets. — VNS
