BEIJING – Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu said on Sunday that he’s deeply encouraged by Premier Li Keqiang’s work report at the opening of the first session of the 14th National People’s Congress, in which the premier said the central government will faithfully implement “one country, two systems” and boost Hong Kong’s long-term stability and prosperity.

Lee said the special administrative region will fully enforce the principle of “one country, two systems”, actively integrate Hong Kong into national development, and make every effort to work for the well-being of the city’s residents.

Hong Kong will give full play to the value of “patriots administering Hong Kong” to unite all sectors of the community and make every effort to lift the city’s economy, Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu said. The SAR will seize the unlimited opportunities offered by various national strategies

The HKSAR government will comprehensively, accurately and unwaveringly apply “one country, two systems” under which “the people of Hong Kong administer Hong Kong” with a high degree of autonomy, the chief executive said in a statement issued by the SAR government following the premier’s work report delivered at the 14th NPC’s opening session on Sunday morning.

Hong Kong will give full play to the value of “patriots administering Hong Kong” to unite all sectors of the community and make every effort to lift the city’s economy, Lee said. The SAR will seize the unlimited opportunities offered by various national strategies, including the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2015), the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the Belt and Road Initiative, to actively incorporate the city into national development.

Lee also thanked the NPC Standing Committee for enacting and implementing the National Security Law for Hong Kong, improving the city’s electoral system, and implementing the principle of “patriots administering Hong Kong” in the past few years, restoring order from chaos.

Late last year, the NPCSC also interpreted the NSL for Hong Kong, which is of great significance in further improving the legal system and enforcement mechanism to effectively safeguard national security, Lee added.

The first session of the 14th NPC began in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Sunday morning, with Premier Li delivering the last government work report of his term.

Li vowed that the central government will continue to faithfully implement the policy of “one country, two systems” with a high degree of autonomy in Hong Kong, and support the SAR in growing its economy, improving residents’ lives, and maintaining the city’s long-term prosperity and stability.

Lee attended the NPC’s opening session and will return to Hong Kong on Monday.
