BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN – The Iban community in Labi celebrated Hari Gawai with a Ngiling Bidai ceremony at Teraja Longhouse recently (June 27), giving thanks for a fruitful year and harvest while strengthening community ties.
Organised by the Teraja Longhouse Committee and its Women’s Bureau, the celebration aimed to foster friendship and unity among the Iban community, particularly those living in the rural areas of Belait District, while preserving the rich traditions and cultural heritage associated with Hari Gawai.
Assistant Belait District Officer Muhammad Faiq bin Haji Rani attended as the guest of honour. Also present were Legislative Council members Yang Berhormat Awang Haji Salleh bin Haji Othman and Yang Berhormat Mohammad bin Abdullah @ Lim Swee Ann, penghulus, village heads, and representatives from government and private sector agencies.
Guests were welcomed by Chairman of the Teraja Longhouse Committee Awang Burong Anak Nyanggau, together with committee members and members of the Women’s Bureau.
Appreciation certificates under the theme ‘Jasamu Dikenang’ were also presented to individuals in recognition of their contributions towards improving the local economy and enhancing basic infrastructure at the longhouse.
The celebration concluded with cultural performances, including the traditional Ngajat dance, Kuntau martial arts demonstrations and group singing by members of the Teraja Longhouse Committee and Women’s Bureau.
