PHNOM PENH – A senior official at the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology called on the people living along the Mekong River and other rivers and streams in Kampong Cham province to be alert for potential floods because the water levels are increasing due to rainfall.
The call was made by Chhea Bunrith, technical director of the Department of Water Resources, during his visit to the area to assess the situation there and inspect the irrigation systems and the progress being made by farmers planting crops in Kampong Cham province on July 22.
He also instructed the provincial Department of Water Resources and Meteorology to alert people living along the rivers to be vigilant about rising waters during the rainy season.
Um Vibol, director of the provincial Department of Water Resources and Meteorology, said that he had assigned officials to stand-by around the clock at each water reservoir and dam who will open or close the floodgates as necessary.
Vibol said that since the rainy season started, Kampong Cham has already planted 99.58 per cent or 8,613ha out of a total of 8,6500ha available for cultivation.
