YANGON – Some rental cars are also facing fuel shortages, reducing their available running time and increasing fares.

Some drivers in Yangon reported that the number of vehicles queuing to buy fuel at gas stations in Yangon has increased compared to the previous days.

“”There are more cars than before. The queue from the Max gas station in front of Thuwanna Park has even crossed the bridge and reached the Thaketa side. The queue is not small. It is in the hundreds,”” said a vehicle owner.

Similarly, some Yangon residents said they saw lines of vehicles waiting to buy fuel at other fuel stations.

“There are more cars queuing at gas stations. I heard that some gas stations don’t even have diesel. Some gas stations run out of gas while they’re selling it, so people have to wait. There are still a lot of cars waiting. There are more cars than trucks here. But today there are significantly more than before. There are Mercedes and Lexuses in the queue. Even those cars are lined up with their windows down,” said a vehicle owner in Yangon.

In addition, rental car prices have also increased, and some rental cars are unable to run due to fuel shortages, according to some rental car drivers and passengers.

“A ride with Grab that used to cost only 15,000 won now costs 20,000 to 30,000 won. A ride from Thaketa to Kyauk Kone that used to cost only 7,000 won has now become 12,000 won. In the evening, Grab becomes a kind of market. But it’s not as expensive as before,” said a taxi driver.

Some taxi drivers said that due to the current increase in fuel prices, taxi fares have also increased, as have parking fees.

“Now that the price of oil has increased to over 700 kyats per liter, the fares have also increased. And since the fuel costs only 50,000 kyats per day, it is not very expensive to drive. For a Point 3 car, with the current fuel price, it costs only over 12 liters. At 50,000 kyats, it can only drive 150 kilometers. On a day when the car is closed like today, even if you have to drive a lot, you cannot drive the full 150 kilometers. If the car is good, the taxi will charge about 60,000 kyats at the previous fuel price. Now, if you drive for a day, this fuel is not enough. When you run out of fuel, there is not much left to drive,” said a taxi driver in Yangon.

According to the Fuel Import, Storage and Distribution Supervision Committee, the reference prices of gasoline have increased by more than 700 to 900 kyats per liter and diesel by more than 1,000 kyats per liter.

Fuel prices change on Friday, the last day of the week.

According to the Fuel Import, Storage and Distribution Supervisory Committee on March 20, a liter of 92 gasoline costs Ks3,610, a liter of 95 gasoline costs Ks3,850, a liter of regular diesel costs Ks4,390, and a liter of premium diesel costs Ks4,820.
