KUALA LUMPUR – Egg cartels will no longer be able to push up prices with the government ordering fresh measures to handle the egg supply and pricing issues in the country.
The new price of chicken eggs will be announced by Agriculture and Food Security Minister Mohamad Sabu today.
“I have discussed with the minister (Mohamad Sabu) and ordered measures to be taken,” said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, adding that the announcement today would reduce the cartels’ role in egg supply.
“Hopefully, eggs will be cheaper and there will be sufficient supply,” Anwar said at a press conference after a special Cabinet meeting here yesterday.
Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub admitted that the country was now facing an egg shortage problem in the market.
He said the shortage has caused anxiety among the people and disrupted the economy as many business activities required eggs.
