Myanmar condo owner sentenced to five years imprisonment, after over 200 died in 2025 quake

YANGON – U Naing Htun Lin, the owner of the Sky Villa condo complex that killed more than 200 people in the Mandalay earthquake, has been sentenced to five years in prison and hard labor by the Aung Myay Thar San Township Court, according to reports.

Sky Villa condo owner U Naing Htun Lin was charged at the Aung Myay Thar San Township Court on February 10 and was granted bail to face trial.

Then, on March 17, his bail was revoked and he was ordered to stand trial.

A case was filed under Section 304-A of the IPC at the Aung Myay Thar San Township Police Station No. (1) and he was arrested and charged. On June 23, he was sentenced to five years in prison with hard labor.

“U Zaw Moe Aung, the head of the Special Investigation Department, filed a lawsuit. On June 23, U Naing Htun Lin was sentenced to 5 years in prison and hard labor under Section 304-A of the Penal Code. When the lawsuit was first filed, he was on bail. In detail, the case file has

been sent to Aung Myat Thar San District Court as Criminal Amendment No. 39A/2026, as requested,” the Aung Myat Thar San Township Court’s information officer responded to the case.

It is also learned that both sides are preparing to appeal and attend the trial.

The 11-story Sky Villa condo building located between 60th Street, 21st Street, and 22nd Street in Aung Myay Thar San Township collapsed due to the earthquake, resulting in the death toll reaching over 200 bodies.

The team, which included Daw Thet Khaing, the wife of U Naing Htun Lin, MD of NTL Construction Company, which built Sky Villa, held three ceremonies at 19th Street, Mong Taing Zayet, to provide one million kyats in compensation to each person who died in the condo collapse and to offer condolences.
